Dr. Erika Beard-Irvine, Ascension Class of 1983

"My time at Ascension gave me a strong start for my future education. The small class sizes allowed me to have a challenging educational experience in a warm, nurturing atmosphere. In a time of cuts in public school programs, I had art, music, PE, an

Student Life

Student Council

The Student Council is made up of students from grades 3 through 8, that are elected by the members of their class.  The Student Council is an excellent opportunity for students to provide a voice in various school issues and also to learn about government and responsibility.

Athletic Programs

Ascension offers Kindergarten through 2nd grade students the option of joining one of our "Little Eagles Sports Leagues".  We offer several different leagues including soccer, basketball and T-ball.

For students in grades 3-8, Ascenion offers, boys and girls basketball, track and field and cheerleading. These teams engage in friendly competition with the Lutheran and other Christian schools in the Washington Area.

Field Trips

During the course of a school year, Ascension Students take many interesting and educational field trips. Some of those are:

Londontown

The sixth grade took a field trip to Londontown, a 17th and 18th century Maryland Community. During their visit they learned about 17th and 18th century life using information gained from archeology.

Wye Mill

The 8th grade took a field trip to historic Wye Mill in Wye Mills, MD. While at the mill, the students learned about history of milling from the time of the Romans to the present, and its importance to an 18th century community.

Classroom and School Wide Activities

Read Across America Day

Students in Kindergarten through Third Grade celebrate Read Across America Day with a day of reading enjoyment.

Second Grade Tulip Project

The 2nd graders planted tulips in the fall and study the effects of the climate on the growth and development of the tulips.  The students recorded their findings in a Science Journal.

Pioneer Day

Pioneer Day is an annual celebration in Third Grade at Ascension. Each year students and parent volunteers participate in a variety of hands-on centers designed to integrate art into the Social Studies curriculum. Students are encouraged to dress as a pioneer child in the 1800’s may have done.

Activities such as dipping candles, making yarn dolls, stringing cranberries, cooking fry bread, making applesauce, and churning butter are designed to show the hard work of preparing for a pioneer Christmas. Students learn to appreciate how much effort it is to make everything homemade. Pioneer families were forced by circumstances to be self-sufficient.

Through guest speakers who re-enact Pioneer history, and reading books like Laura Ingalls Wilder’s "Little House in the Big Woods" and Avi’s, "The Secret School" during Language Arts instruction help to further instruct the students on the American Pioneer experience.

Literature and Science Fair

Each year Ascension hosts a Literature and Science Fair wherein students in create and display projects on various topics.  Students in Kindergarten through 3rd Grade, and students in 5th and 7th grade participate in a Literature Fair.  Students in grades 4, 6 and 8 participate in the Science Fair and are judged and awarded ribbons for their projects.
